Early Life
Born in East Los Angeles
I was born in Santa Marta Hospital and Clinic in East Los Angeles to George and Mina. I am an Angelino through and through, and I have a deep love and respect for my city.
My parents each immigrated from Iran. My father stowed aboard a ship and joined the US Army as an interpreter to earn his citizenship. My mother left Iran during the revolution in the early 80s.
They met in Los Angeles, married, and had me in a short time. They soon discovered that they were incompatible and divorced.
Early Studies
My mother and I moved between various apartments in Chatsworth after she separated from my father. Most of my early childhood was marred by instability.
Although we often didn’t have food or rent, we had a lot of help. My mother worked multiple jobs to ensure that she could send me to a private elementary school and the staff there took excellent care of us.
I excelled in math and science. By the time I reached the 6th grade, I had already completed the 8th grade algebra course, and I spent the rest of my time self-studying geometry and computers.
My First Computer
I didn’t spend a lot of time with my father growing up, but I remember his Intel 286 PC. I was so attached to it that he bought me my own computer.
It was one of the most impactful gifts of my life. I spent every waking minute creating, learning, and gaming with my new Intel 486 PC.
This pivotal moment started a deep passion for technology, and I’ve never looked back.
My Big Sisters
However, no one in my life has made a more significant impact than my two sisters. My father had two daughters before meeting my mother.
Teresa took care of me nearly every weekend through elementary and middle school. Ever present, she showed me constant attention and love. She taught me the importance of flossing and how to dress well. We spent time reading in parks.
Kathy was there for me at each of the most challenging moments in my life. She guided me and often rescued me. She taught me the importance of self-reliance. We spent time cooking and critiquing independent films.
